WiFi requirements

Before the sensor is physically installed in a room, checks regarding the WiFi should be carried out.

General

General requirements for the WiFi network.

  • Make sure that the WiFi supports the 2.4 GHz frequency.
    • Supported standard: IEEE 802.11b/g/n
    • The sensor does not support the 5 GHz frequency.
  • Find out the WiFi name (SSID) and password.
    • It is strongly recommended to work with a single SSID.
    • It is also recommended to use a separate SSID and VLAN.
  • Count the number of sensors per WiFi access point.
    • It is recommended to connect no more than 15 sensors per access point.
  • Each sensor needs an IP address.
    • Please make sure that the network has enough IP addresses and a 10% reserve is maintained.
    • Permanent IP address reservation is recommended but not required.

Security check

Requirements for the security of the WiFi network.

  • Check the WiFi encryption protocol.
    • The sensor supports the WPA2, WPA2-PSK and WPA2 (CCMP) protocols.
  • Make sure the WiFi doesn’t require login (2-factor authentication).
    • What is meant here is a guest access with a front page.
  • Does the WiFi have MAC address filtering?
    • If so, the MAC addresses of the sensors must be entered/approved.
  • Check whether the WiFi allows unrestricted access to the Internet.

Signal strength

Signal strength and quality of the WiFi network.

  • A WiFi analysis app can be used to determine the strength and quality of the WiFi signal.
  • Place the smartphone as close as possible to the future installation location of the sensor.
  • Look for the WiFi name (SSID) with the 2.4 GHz frequency.
  • Check the WiFi signal (RSSI) and note the highest value.

Internet speed

Internet connection speed requirements.

  • Connect the smartphone to the same WiFi in which the sensors should also be connected.
  • Conduct an internet connection speed test per room.
  • Note the value for download speed and upload speed.
